Eating healthy can be expenive but it doesn't have to be as expensive as people may claim. The truth is that you don't have to have everything you eat be organic! I believe in moderation and I believe in picking my battles wisely. The philosphy in our house is to use best judgement and to be skeptical of fads. I think that is great advice and it helps us shop with peace of mind.

I do think that buying meats, veggies, milk, yogurt, and etc can be more expensive that a boxed dinner, but it is cheaper than fast food for sure! Also you want to find the balance between having a sound bank account and having a body that will have longevity. At the end of the day you want to feel good about what you're putting in your body so you have to take the time and think about what your philosophy is. My overall food philosophy is to eat natural foods, if I can't tell you what it is then I won't eat it.

So the other day I went grocery shopping for our 2 person household and was on a mission to keep the trip under 150. We buy groceries every week because we eat fresh food, so my goal was to spend only 600 this month for the both of us. Before you jump to conclusions about how expensive that is, please keep in mind my husband is like a garbage disposal : he eats A LOT.

Ok so my first priority was meat. I bought 3 packets of chicken, one packet of ground beef (as lean as possible and grass fed) and one thing of small porkchops. The meat was about $20.

Next I focus on getting enough fruits and veggies, which make up most of our snacks.

- 2 bunches of bananas (they can be organic or unorgranic. Since I don't eat the banana peels I don't care if they are orgranic or not)

- 2 containers of organic strawberries (3.99 ea)

- 3 ears of corn on the cob (3 for 1)

- 3 sweet potatoes (.99 for the 3)

- 3 squashes (1.50 for the 3)

-habenero and jalepenos (.90)

-3 green bell peppers and 3 red bell peppers (3.00)

- 3 cucumbers (.99)

- 2 lbs of tomatoes (2.50)

- a bag of carrots (1.50)

-a head of cabbage (.99)

-3 bundles of green onions (.99)

-frozen peas (2.50)

- container of spinach salad mix (the most expensive thing in this section at 4 dollars)

Next I moved to the dairy section

- coconut milk (2.99)

- almond milk (2.99)

- 2 cartons of eggs that are cage free (we usually have 2-3 cartons of eggs a week) 3.99 carton

- piece of gouda cheese (2.99)

- piece of sharp cheddar (2.99)

- carton of greek yogurt (5.99)

Then on to the canned section. I prefer canned beans because they are quick and easy. I make sure I get the NO SALT ADDED so I don't have too much sodium.

- 2 cans of beans (.99 ea)

- 3 cans of tuna (1.99 ea)

- 4 gluten free snack bars (1.99 each) These snack bars are great for the road and on the go, but I have 2 a week and so does my husband since these are processed items.

I bought all of this food that was very healthy and it ended up being $111 for a whole week's worth of food. Actually it's been 4 days since I made that trip and I still have so much left. You really can shop on a budget and eat very healthy. I also have what meals I am going to make for the week in my head too so I don't just buy random stuff and not use it. What I didn't buy this time around that I usually would've was avocados (1.50 ea) and cottage cheese (3.99). Our bill can get pretty high, but that's usually if we buy a lot of cheese, chips, wine or go crazy o n the organic fruit.

Don't think about not eating healthy because it's too expensive, because it doesn't have to be. Identify a motto, stick to it and find foods that fit that!
